Fiber to the Home (FTTH) is available in most areas, and requires installation of an Optical Network
Terminal (ONT) near a power source.
FTTH and Power Outages
Without a battery backup or alternate power source such as a generator, FTTH customers will not be able
to make any calls, including emergency calls to 911. The only way to mantain the ability to use your phone
is by using some form of bacup power. A battery backup for your ONT will not provide distributed power to
any services other than voice over a corded phone. Home security systems, medical monitoring devices,
modems, cordless phone, and other equipment will not run on the battery backup unless directly
connected to the backup power device.
Customers may purchase a 24-hour battery from Franklin Telephone Co., Inc. consisting of a controller unit
and three connected batteries. The charge for the battery unit is $200 plus a $25 installation fee. Customers
may opt to purchase a battery backup from another source such as an electronics or office supply retailer
and install it themselves near their ONT, or forego the use of a battery backup.
If the electricity to your home goes out, FTTH phone service will not work unless there is an alternate
source of power. For all backup batteries, the actual amount of standby power will depend on the age of
the battery, the amount of usage during the outage, and the environment where the battery is stored.
Conditions that are too hot, cold, or dusty will negatively impact the battery. Most backup batteries are
rechargeable and have an estimated useful life span on 3-5 years. You can preserve battery life during a
power outage by using your phone service sparingly and not using any internet services.
Battery Testing and Monitoring
You are responsible for monitoring and maintaining your battery. We recommend testing your battery at
least once every six months to ensure continuity of phone service during a power outage.
