FTTH and Power OutagesWithout a battery backup or alternate power source such as a generator, FTTH customers will not be able to make any calls, including emergency calls to 911. The only way to mantain the ability to use your phone is by using some form of bacup power. A battery backup for your ONT will not provide distributed power to any services other than voice over a corded phone. Home security systems, medical monitoring devices, modems, cordless phone, and other equipment will not run on the battery backup unless directly connected to the backup power device.Customers may purchase a 24-hour battery from Franklin Telephone Co., Inc. consisting of a controller unit and three connected batteries. The charge for the battery unit is $200 plus a $25 installation fee. Customers may opt to purchase a battery backup from another source such as an electronics or office supply retailer and install it themselves near their ONT, or forego the use of a battery backup.If the electricity to your home goes out, FTTH phone service will not work unless there is an alternate source of power. For all backup batteries, the actual amount of standby power will depend on the age of the battery, the amount of usage during the outage, and the environment where the battery is stored. Conditions that are too hot, cold, or dusty will negatively impact the battery. Most backup batteries are rechargeable and have an estimated useful life span on 3-5 years. You can preserve battery life during a power outage by using your phone service sparingly and not using any internet services.Battery Testing and MonitoringYou are responsible for monitoring and maintaining your battery. We recommend testing your battery at least once every six months to ensure continuity of phone service during a power outage.
